Types of ginseng??
Question: What is the difference between the different types of Ginseng? What properties are they each supposed to have? Thanks.
Answers: Well, there's primarily Korean, American, and Siberian (also called Eleuthero Root). There are a few other minor species , but I won't cover those right now as they aren't as common to find.
All three types help general stress and physical energy.
Korean Ginseng also has benefits for a healthy immune system as well as general mental function.
American Ginseng is purported to specifically boost both mental energy (instead of just stress) and physical energy.
Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) actually helps for physical stamina more than energy (which is why more athletes tend to prefer this type).
Eleuthero Root is also technically not Ginseng per se.... but it has such similar properties that the original discoverers called it Ginseng (which I always thought was funny).
Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
Warming stimulant. Produces strongest stimulation. Red warms more than white. As daily tonic, increases energy and revs up bodily functions. Taken as an energizer by those feeling depleted.
American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium)
Cools and soothes. Increase bodily fluids. Coveted in China as a superior tonic. Adaptogenic that soothes addled nerves.
Siberan Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
Not true ginseng, but produces similar effects. Increases stamina, endurance, resistance to stress. Taken by those in high-stress situations
