Unfortunately, dry skin can be a symptom of many disorders, including poor function of the thyroid, poor absorbtion of nutrients because of bowel malfunction, or because of certain medications.
One of the most important dietary deficiencies that shows up in the skin is Vitamin F or essential fatty acids that cannot be made by the body. The most essential of these is linoleic acid. Ten to 20 percent of total calorie intake should be Vitamin F.
Fortified flax seed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, plus several important minerals. Mix into any fruit or vegetable juice; make into salad dressing; add to hot breakfast cereal after cooking.
Cold water fish is rich in linoleic acid: salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines.
Evening Primrose Oil contains the highest amount of vital gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) of any food substance. It is available in liquid or soft gel caps. Black Current Oil is a close runner-up and may be a little less expensive.
Avoid heated and hydrogenated oils because their natural linoleic acid content has been converted to trans-fatty acids.
