Hi my son,s anesthetic does not work when he goes to the dentist ??
Question: Does this happen to anyone else or can anyone suggest anything i can do ?He is 13
Answers: It doesn't happen to me, but I have had patients with this problem. There can be a few reasons, but it is usually either that they need a higher dosage of anaesthetic or that they have extra nerve supply to the area that you are trying to numb.
when you build up a tolerance to nitrous, it doesnt work. they sell these things called whippets, small metal things that are supposed to be used for whipped cream. But a lot of kids inhale it for fun. He has been doing some.
Tell the dentist. He/She will either change the dosage or the pain killer. Contrary to popular opinion, dentists are not normally sadistic. They really do not want their patients to be in pain while in the chair. But, most people do not let the dentist know cause they think for some reason it has to be painful. So, they leave a painful visit and tell everyone they know how awful the dentist was.
you can ask the dentist to up his dosage that's what I did when I was getting a tooth pulled I felt everything she was doing so she paused and got me some more after that second dosage it was smooth sailing. the same thing happened to me when I was giving birth and had a c-section I felt them cut me open and screamed for more anesthesia it was horrible they kept pumping it in to me but i could still move and feel. its just harder for some people to go under.
It didn't work on me either. When I was 15 yrs. I had a tooth drilled on and they had to give me 9 shots of Novocaine and not 1 worked. I almost broke my moms hand I squeezed it so hard. I have had shots of Novocaine after that and it worked, but I don't know why that one time it didn't. I have to get my wisdom teeth removed but I have been putting it of out of fear of the anesthesia not working. I don't know what else to do, but I understand the PAIN!
my wife has the same difficulty- locals with her last just about as long as it takes to inject it. unfortunately I am not aware of anything that can be done to correct the situation.
Same thing has happened to me, ever since childhood. Once, at age 9, while having stitches put into my knee, a WONDERFUL pediatrician explained this to me, and I UNDERSTOOD it, have REMEMBERED it for all of these years, and now, get to pass it on to YOU and YOUR SON!
The Doctor explained that MY system METABOLIZED Lidocaine FASTER than most folks, but, that A LOT of folks have this problem. He told me to tell FUTURE Doctors, and DENTISTS, just that: that I metabolize Lidocaine FASTER than most, and that my doctor said to ask for a DOUBLE DOSE.
MOST DOCTORS will BELIEVE you, or give you the benefit of the doubt.
It has ALWAYS workked for ME. Sometimes, a dentist will give me the USUAL DOSE of Lidocaine, then CHECK ME, find out that I can STILL FEEL what's going on, THEN will give the additionl dose. THEN he'll say that the doctor who told me that was RIGHT. Some guys are just more STUBBORN than most.

it happens to me when i was young i had a dentist who did not believe in anesthetic so im terrafied and this causes the anesthetic not to start working as fast have the dentist give him the shot then leave him alone for a while maby you can talk and joke around with him calm him down the after a break have the dentist try if it still isnt working have the dentest give a nother shot this always works for me good luck

First of all, the first answer given by the picture of the big boobs is absolutely insanely WRONG and IGNORANT. My husband has the same problem at the dentist...he finally found that there is an alternative to novacaine that is about a bazillion times stronger. I forget what it's called, but I always call it Solarcaine and they always know what I am taking about. That, in combination of nitrous is the only thing that seems to do the trick!
