TERRIFIED of the dentist, please help??

Question: Okay, I really need to get to a dentist. My parents spent a ton of money on my teeth as a kid and although my teeth are healthy I need to practice good hygine for all obvious reasons. I am just terrified of that scraping sound. It makes me squirm and sweat to the point that I almost lose it in the chair. Novicane doesn't bug me, shots are fine--it is the scraping and the little pick thing they have. I have tried anti-anxiety meds but those don't do anything. I just can't bring myself to do it. If anyone has advice please let me in on it, thanks!
Answers: You can always ask your dentist if they can use Nitrous Oxide or also know as laughing gas. I'm a dental assistant and we use it on pt's who are terrified of the dental office. So call and see it can't hurt to see...Good Luck
put some headphones on and crank up the music
Yes, I agree with the 1st answer...nitrous oxide. If not, then maybe your dentist can put you into a twilight sleep which is not quite full general anesthesia.
Let the dentist know how you feel and take it from there.
if Valium did not help (its the only way i could go ! )i also tried a sort of self hypnosis cd it worked pretty good .i can e- mail you a copy if you'd like.my e mail is douglasmccluskey@sbcglobal.net
KristyLee is right.
White Trash has good advice too.
I would do both. The music will block out the sound and the laughing gas will calm your nerves.
nobody but you & Only U can do it .& I know u can do it
Tell your dentist about the sounds & he will try to avoid those
thanks
