I'm sooo scared of the dentist!??
Question: Ok in a week, I have to get a baby tooth and a grown up tooth pulled and the next week, same thing. The week after that, I have to get braces. Talk about a bad month! I am terrified of the dentist and I can barely sleep knowing that soon I will be sitting in the dentists chair have needles poked into my mouth. I am really scared because I have had teeth pulled when I was little and I remember the novacaine hurting a lot. Please help me, what should I do???
Answers: A few simple tips to make things easier for you:
1) first thing in the morning appointments are easier. Both you and the doctor are fresh
2) sedation - sometimes nitrous oxide can help calm your nerves. It does cost extra, but some patients feel that it's worth it. Talk to your surgeon and your mother about it.
3) small talk - talk to the assistant or the dentist for a few minutes before your procedure. Ask them to explain the procedure and what's going on.
4) hand signals - work out a hand signal with your doctor for the shot. Left hand up may mean too fast, left thumbs up means feels better.
5) topical anesthetic may make the shot hurt a little less.
6) deep breathing with your nose. This will help your body to calm down a bit. Don't hyperventilate, and don't forget to breathe, either.
7) keep your eyes open - if you don't like what you see, then look away, but don't close your eyes. Closing your eyes causes you to imagine things worse than they are, and it also causes you to tense up your face.
8) keep mom in the waiting room. I'm saying this from experience; it's worse with your parents in the room than without. When you have a parent in the room, that little inner child know that it can cry to get help or attention. Kids with parents in the room cry far, far more often than kids with no parents in the room.
For what it's worth, my sister is a veterinarian, and they use far, far bigger needles than dentists do :)
It's perfectly OK to be a little bit frightened by the whole experience. Just know that there a lot of little things that you can do to make a big difference.
Good luck,
have them put you to sleep.
Have your parents call your denstist and discuss this with him or if you are old enough call yourself. The dentist can consider having you come in early and give you a mild sedative medication to help relax you before your appointment maybe. Talk to the dentist about this fear though long before you are scheduled for your appointment.
A smile is one of the most beautiful characteristics a person can have. It's one of the first things people notice about you. I too am scared of the dentist, but you have to realize that if you don't get these things taken care of now, they will only get much worse. I went to school with a boy who was also scared of the dentist, he had a cavity in his front tooth. I watched him grow up, and now, he has let all of his front teeth rot out. Please just relax and have these procedures done. If you take care of your teeth, you won't have to go to the dentist as often.
Calm yourself. It isn't that bad.
Don't worry. Everyone is scared of the dentist (even dentists don't like to go to the dentist!) and scared of the unknown. There will be some jelly that gets put on your gums to make them numb, then you will have the medicine injected. If you stay very still, it will not hurt. You will feel a small pinch, a slight (very slight) burning sensation, then everything in the area will go to sleep. Worrying is wasted energy. Talking about it helps. Keep talking about it, but try not to worry about it. Dentists spend alot more time and energy these days making sure that people are comfortable in their chairs. It makes THEIR day alot easier, too. Good luck. I know you'll do great!
Hey you just need to chill out
Baby girl just know that now they numb your mouth with this stuff that tastes like pineapple before they even give you the shot. They have new products now that are a whole lot better then back when we were younger. The doctor is gonna give you pain medicine so you wont hurt after the novacaine wears off. The medicine will say take every four to six hours. Take the medicine every 3 hours cause the last thing you want is the medicine to wear off because its the after effect thats painful. The needle wont even hurt. Tell him to use the pineapple stuff lol.
get laughing gas instead, thats what they did for me
