How many days does it take for antibotics to take effect? and other infection related questions??
Question: I was having very bad pain after the first appointment of a root canal procedure. The doctor prescribed me Amoxycillin. I've been in pain for about 3 days now. And there's only 5 days of medications in the pack.
How long will it take the antibiotic to work?
What if my infection is not gone when the medication is finished?
I'm assuming the infection is in the root canals because i feel it's quite deep. My jaws hurt and swell a bit, has the infection passed onto my jaws?
Answers: It usually takes 4-5 days to start working good. It will stay in your system for about 2 weeks after finishing the last dose. If the infection is not gone, you may need to be placed on a stronger antibiotic or combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid which goes by the trade name Augmentin. Try Motrin or Ibuprofen for the pain. It usually works best for dental pain.
It starts to work a couple of hours after you take the first dose. But it may take up to a week after your last dose for the infection to be fully gone. For severe infection, you may need a second course. Give it another day, then call your doc.
If the docotor is having you come back for a second appointment chances are that he is not done cleaning out the canal and that has more do with your pain than any infection.
