Questions about root canals???
Question: i have to do a root canal on saturaday morning..i'm so scared.i have a couple of questions
1.will it hurt?
2.will the anasthetic injection hurt?
3.can i take 2 panadols before going to the dentists?
4.will the dentist be ok with me taking an ipod?
5.any ways to keep calm?

Answers: a lot of people confuse the pain of the infected or abscessed tooth to the root canal it's self, it's no different then getting a filling or a crown done, it just may take a little longer, you could be so infected that you may not be able to get numb but in that case they'll give you more antibiotics and do it at a later time, the antibiotics should have taken care of most of the infection before you go in for the root canal, the only discomforts that are really anything worth mentioning are, having your mouth open for about 1 1/2 hours and maybe the tiny spot where they get you numb (only if it's a bottom tooth, this type of needle is more invasive and a bit longer because it has to go through muscle) the worst part of a root canal is the pain from the infection it's self, (swelling, abscess, and throbbing pain) this has nothing to do with the procedure it's self, so don't worry about it be happy to get in there and get it taken care of! it's a much better alternative then getting the tooth pulled which if you have an infection is your only other option.
1. No, it doesnt hurt. If anythng it brings relief. (I just had one done a month ago)
2. Nope, it wont hurt because they give you a topical freezing first. (meaning the rub some gel on your gums, that way you never feel a thing)
3. No, dont take anything before you go. And if you do, let the dentist know right away.
4. Yeap, you can bring music on your IPod, just dont turn it up too loud!
5. Its no big deal. Seriously. Just take deep breaths in through you nose and out through your mouth before they begin. Tap your finger to the music and think about that boy you think is cute.

I just had my first root canal done on Tuesday and if I ever need another one in my lifetime they'll be putting me to sleep because my jaw hurt SO bad from having to keep my mouth open for so long! The actual procedure is no problem and you don't feel any pain at all. The dentist had to keep telling me to open my mouth wider so you'll have to talk to him about the ipod thing because he may need to talk to you and have you answer him! I was a big baby while I was there so they turned on the t.v for me which I didn't even watch! I had my eyes closed most of the time and all I could think of was the pain in my jaw! If it's possilbe for you to be put under at your dentist then I would recommend it! I took some ibuprofen before I had my root canal done but I would call the dentist and ask him if it's ok just to make sure! Mine was ok with it! Good Luck and don't worry......you'll be fine!!
