Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist??

Question: I have always wanted to become a radiologist, but lately I have been looking toward the dental field and was wondering what is the chance of becoming an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. This would be the specialty that I would prefer due to it being very related to a medical doctor radiologist. I am thinking about the military to for after graduate school, and was wondering if they have any in this specialty. Thanks for all who answer (and I don't mind long detailed answers at all).
Answers: While the fields may sound similar they are really quite different. Medical radiologists spend their time reading many, many patient radiographs each day. They make a TON of money. $300,000 - 400,000+ if the numbers I have heard are to be believed.

Dental radiology is more of an academic specialty. Most dental radiologists will work in a school / research setting. There just isn't much need for their services clinically. The pay is going to be MUCH less than a medical radiologist for the same number of years in training... probably more like the salary of an engineer.

I love being a dentist; it is a fantastic career. But if you know you want to be a radiologist I think medical school is probably a better choice.

Hope that helps
I have never had a specialist take my dental x-rays. It's always the dental assistant who does it (even when I had oral surgery).

I'm just not sure I see this as a needed specialty. You might be better off just sticking with the radiology career, and see what opportunities are out there for specialization.
