(for braces wearers please) do you actually listen to your orthodontist??
Question: how many of you actually stopped eating caramel and popcorn, gummy bears, gum and stuff due to what your ortho said? i'm getting braces soon, and i'm not sure i can go 1 1/2 years w/o any of those. i also have friends who occasionaly break the rules. what about you?
Answers: If you absolutely cannot live without the no-no foods, then you have to be willing to deal with the possible results. As an ortho assistant, I saw brackets and bands loosened which resulted in multiple extra trips to the office; I saw treatments go on for longer than planned as the patient didn't want to come in and fix these so as not to admit any wrongdoing. I also saw the yellow, green, and sometimes brown stains left on teeth after the appliances were removed, as the sticky foods got into pretty impossible areas to clean with the braces on. Yes, people do break the rules; but consider the fact that braces are an investment in yourself. Why go through 18+ months of therapy just to have to spend even more time and money on fillings and bleaching?
i never listened to them, but yes gum sometimes gets stuck. if u eat caramel u could lose an elastic. but if u eat a lot of junk food just brush ur teeth good, cuz when they come off u could have a few cavities.
Didnt really-kind of risky. Just be carfeul. Caramel, laffy taffy, tootsie rolls, saltwater taffy you should DEFIENTLY not eat. No matter how much u want 2. Gum, popcorn, and gummy bears worked fine for me though.
i follow the rules for the most part. every once in a while i will break a rule or so. you are so lucky! you have them for only a year and half. I have to have them for over 2 years
You can break the rules, but not EVERY rule. I still drink soda and eat popcorn and cornchips. I avoid gum and the big pieces of jerky though.
food wise I listen to him most of the time and avoid the no-no foods however it is more because those foods cause me pain than because he said not to eat them.
I've only had braces for 1 month so far, I've stuck to her advice mostly. I've eaten some caramel recently and it didn't get stuck at all, I normally don't eat gum anyway, popcorn I've stayed well away from, general hard foods I have eaten but broken them up to make it easier. Gummy bears/sweets like that have been fine to eat, no pain whatsoever.
I have heard though, I may be wrong, the 'no-no' foods are worse to your braces when you have elastics in, I don't at the moment. (This is just what I've heard from friends).
I'd say just go ahead and occasionally do it, do it often and you are likely to break something/extend the treatment time. Heck, I know someone who had braces for 2 years and drank coke (lots of it, every single day) throughout the 2 years and nothing came from it.
