Taking Antibiotics after Root Canal -- A bad thing??
Question: I had a root canal done on #30 and I was prescribed Amoxicillin 500MG capsules. My father told me that it is not a good idea to take antibiotics just because he believes so. I googled my question and the result was a 1999 article where two endodontist said that antibiotics should never be taken after Root Canal Therapy because the antibiotics would not even reach the tooth since no blood reaches the canals making it useless and dangerous to take antibiotics. At the time, I am afraid to take the pills and I am afraid of what might happen if I dont take the pills.
Answers: i dotn know if you should or shouldnt take them .i usually take them and i know people with heart murmers take them casue of risk of infection and such.i dont think the drs you read about are entirely truthful okay maybe no anitbiotics reach the tooth but when you get an infection the whole area can becoem infected and not just the canals where the roots were .i would call the dentist or the pharmacist about the risks of infection and the risk of taking the medicines and see which one would be worse on the body hope the following helps you
If you are concerned then speak to your dentist. Usually you get them before a root canal or extraction if there is an infection. Ask your dentist if you had an infection and that is why it is prescribed?

If the root canal was done because of an abcess-I would certainly take them myself,the infection could go into the bloodstream.Nevertheless,talk with your caregiver (? oral surgeon) as to your concerns.

Root canal is minor surgery... After ANY intervention, be it minor or mayor surgery, antibiotics are prescribed to forestall an infection until the wound heals. Not everyone is Rx'd a antibiotic after a root canal; only if you show signs of any lingering infection. If you question why you were given the medication, I recommend that you call the dentist who prescribed them to you and ask him.
