Do most dental hygienists just scrape teeth all day in the same day or do they do other things too 2??
Question: I heard it can get very monotonous as they r holed up in 1 room all day just doing cleanings...
Answers: In the state that I live in, I am allowed to screen for oral cancer, provide oral prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, do digital radiographic surveys, take intraoral photographs, provide pain management, subgingival irrigation, oral hygiene education, and fluoride treatments.
I've been working at my office for 6 years now, and I've established solid friendships with some of my patients. The work can be monotonous, if you let it become boring. But, the people that I work with, and the people that I see everyday, make it interesting and enjoyable.
That's what the hygienist does, clean teeth. Some provide education on oral hygiene in schools and such.
It depends on your state...
A hygienist can clean teeth, do deep scaling with local anesthesia (although some states require the dentist to give the injections), take x-rays, remove sutures, take impressions, provide bleaching appliances and instructions, give preventive instructions, nutritional counselling, intraoral photography...
Hopefully one of our hygienists will add to this list.
