Forgot the primer on a filling...? (For dental field people)??
Question: For any dental assistants or hygienists out there, I was assisting on a filling the other day, and accidently used the bond agent twice instead of primer then bond agent. Any idea how bad this is and what could happen?
Answers: It depends on the type of filling.
If it was an cavity with good thick enamel margins (like an occlusal), then the patient may experience some post-op pain as the filling could lift off the bottom of the cavity.
If it was an interproxmal posterior, then I would advise it being redone, as it is likely to lift off at the thin enamel margin near the cervical edge of the filling, and allow recurrent decay.
In the old days (showing my age), before we understood the need and chemistry of dentine bonding, marginal leakage and decay was a nasty problem with posterior composites, and many of us went back to amalgam.
Either way, discuss it with the dentist. We all make mistakes, but it's what we do when we recognise an error that shows our character.
I really hope you informed the patient and the Doctor...did you bill the patient ??

AS LONG AS THE TOOTH WAS SUFFICIENTLY ETCHED BEFOREHAND THERE IS PROBABLY NOT MUCH THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE RESTORATION OR THE TOOTH.
DEFINITELY THE DENTIST MUST BE INFORMED.
the primer solves the smear layer which affect the strength of the bond between composit and tooth. so you should ask patient to come and refill his/her tooth. if you dont do this, the filling may leak and infect the tooth.
It will probably do fine. Primer ENHANCES the dentin bond. Remember, we were doing bonded restorations for about 15 years before they invented primer and they are still in place. The enamel is still bonded as well as it ever was, so the restoration will be sealed at the margins.
Just don't make a habit of it.... ;-)
