Which type of filling is better...ceramic or amalgum??
Answers: Ceramic is best for the health. But the amalgam is stronger and bonds better. As far as mercury, it is not any more than you will find in Lake Michigan fish. So the scare is not real.
Amalgam as it lasts long
There is much controvery over Amalgam filling which are 50% mercury. I'm a dental Hygienist and have been told by the ADA that if I tell people that amalgams are unsafe I could loose my license. I have done a great deal of study on mercury because my daughter has mercury poisoning-that's another story.
So all I can tell you are the facts.
1-Mercury is the 2nd most toxic substance on earth!
2-Amalgam restorations have 50% mercury in them. I know I used to mix it!
3- More mercury is released by heat (food, chewing)
4-As a dental hygienist and former dental assistant I would never have amalgams put in my mouth. ESP. if I were pregnant! (mercury is fat soluble and does pass the placenta)
Now some say after the mercury is mixed with the other metals it does not have the same affect, that it binds with these metals and is not poisonous any more. I have not read these studies.
There was a big case before the FDA where many dentists tried to get it banned. They failed. Some say follow the money.

Jeanmarie is absolutely right and what she is saying is true. I would heed her advice.
composite resins anre much better than amalgams, so many dentist are not even offering amalgams in their offices.
