I have been told that chewing on ice can crack teeth. True???

Question: another poster's question...
Answers: only if the enamel is somehow weakened
it depends on each individual involved
chewing or biting anything hard (ice, hard candy....) can crack your teeth.

be careful!
Yes it can. Ice is pretty hard.
Quite possible. Chewing ice is not a smart idea if you value your teeth. In my opinion, it's just like chewing stones.
yes its true.. but depends on the persons teeth..I used to do this all the time ,never bothered me but could not do it now.. my wife opens things with hers and i keep telling her she will be sorry but no one listens to me.. As long as their teeth is in good shape probably not but there is always that one time.. and believe me its painful.
yeah, i busted a tooth that way. My dentist said it was one of the worst things you can chew on.
True, at least my dentist has told me the same thing.
yes, it is true that chewing ice can crack a tooth. it is easy to crack a tooth that has a large restoration (silver or tooth colored) in it. the tooth is weakended by the size of the filling.
also, if a tooth has decay (or a cavity) it is weakended, too.
sure, if you have a bunch of cavities and such.
Possible, not necessarily likely. It takes diamond to cut through the enamel of teeth. Ice is like pork scratchings. Chewing anything hard can crack teeth, but it depends on the individual, if the enamel is weakened for instance. All in all, chewing ice is a bit pointless and not the best idea, why not just drink water instead.
Definitely can crack your teeth! If you chew on quite a few of them in a short period of times, your teeth can get cold and then the coldness becomes near freeze temperature, that it cold cause your bite/chew to put a certain amount of pressure enough to crack your enamel if it is could enough to harden even more from being so cold. Just like how some foods you freeze in your freezer, you can actually 'break' them up with pressure after you take them out of the freezer. Nobody should be chewing on ice...
Believe it or not I broke a tooth chewing on a potato chip. The dentist said you chew with a lot of pressure coming down. Now how hard is a potato chip? Now imagine what a hard candy or ice can do.
My Grandmother always told me this when I was little but I don't know how true it is. Mine aren't cracked to the visual eye.
