GETTING CAVITYS FILLED!!! for the first time, going today!??

Question: help i hate shots!! tell me alll about it and what i can do to make it hurt less or keep my miind off it while im getting the shot
Answers: If the dentist offers Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) as an option, by all means get it if you can. I'm a total dentalphobe and also dread needles but once I've got that Nitrous Oxide mask on, everything seems oookay =)

One other thing that helps me is to acknowledge that, yes, the novicaine shot is going to hurt - but that it only lasts for a few seconds. Try counting backwards from 10 while the shot is being delivered - by the time you get down to 0 it should be over, and (for me anyway), keeping my mind focused on the counting helps me remember that the pain really -isn't- going to last all -that- long ...
Bring a cd player or Ipod.. Once you get novacaine you should be good to go. Maybe consider getting nitrous (laughing gas) if you that much in fear. Or try finding a dentist that specializes in nervous patients.
Relax, I have had my teeth drilled twice and I got to say you will not feel the initial prick when hte needle goes in. Also it does not hurt like ppl tell you. there is not pain involved, if you still feel nervous try this little exercise.. close your eyes picture a pleasant place.. take a deep breath and hold it until the needle comes out of your gums and then exhale, you will do just fine.
A decent dentist - knowing your fear - will have a cream he can rub on your gums to anaesthetise them so you don't even feel the needle going in, let alone the injection.
Novacaine, lidocaine or whatever they use to numb you TAKES TIME to be effective.

He will give you the medication then leave you to numb up and come back to drill.

MAKE SURE HE GIVES YOU A GOOD 15 MINUTES - NO LESS, and not much more either.

If he comes back too soon YOU WILL FEEL IT. If he leaves you sitting there for 25-30 minutes YOU WILL FEEL IT.
Like so many things in life, you have to focus on the greater good.
Yes, the novocaine needle may pinch a little, but when your appointment is over and you've done something so positive to take care of your teeth, there's where the payoff is.

When you get through today's appointment, buy yourself a treat or reward of some kind for being brave.

P.S. I hate the needle, too. It'll really help to breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth, nice and slow, when you get the shot. I also curl and uncurl my toes repeatedly-- and hard so they hurt a little--to keep myself busy until that part is done. It works.
my dentist always rub some kind of gel on and that makes my gums numb so i don't feel the pain of the shot. I used to be big dentalphobia before, but i found great dentist who's so good with scared people! Also if you can get the laughing gas, you will feel the pain of the shot but you don't give a f*** good luck
