I have a really bad toothache and cannot get to see the dentist until the next few days??

Question: I have amoxicillin 500 mg and i wonder how much of that i can take to get the infection down and can i take tylenol extra strentght with it if so how much any help will be appreciated thanks
Answers: First of all call your dentist and ask if your symtoms sound like you have an infection and find out what the doctor says about starting on an antibiotic before you get in to see Him/Her. If you are not allergic to amoxicillin and you have enough to start an appropriate course of it before you go to the dentist and the dentist says it sounds like a good idea, then I say go for it. Some symtoms of an infection are swelling, the area being hot to the touch, any oozing of pus or infected material and fever. Mention these to your doctor when you speak to him/her if they apply to your situation. Yes, it is just fine to take regular or even extra strength tylenol with that antibiotic. However, again, be sure that you are not allergic to Tylenol beforehand and check with your pharmacist and make sure that all the medications which you take are O.K. to take together along with the Tylenol and or amoxicillin. Having worked in the dental field for over 20 years I have found that Ibuprofin/Advil/Motrin works much better than Tylenol when it comes to a toothache. Even Sodium Naproxin/Aleve works better than Tylenol for most people when they are experiencing mouth pain. Again, be sure that you are not allergic to any of these medications, check with your Dr., and also check with your pharmacist to make sure that these medications are also O.K. to take with whatever other medications you may be taking. I gave you the brand names as well as the generic names of the over the counter pain relievers in case cost is of issue with you. Always take over the counter medication as prescribed on the bottle. More isn't always better. However, I have been prescribed and seen prescribed Advil/Motrin/Ibuprofen at as high a dose as 800mg every 6-8 hours. The over the counter pills usually come in 200mg strength. Check with your Dr. to be sure that whatever dosage you take is the best for you personally according to your own health status. Good Luck ....I know toothaches really stink and I'll send some healing vibes out to ya!
PLEASE do NOT self-medicate with antibiotics. You have no idea if it is REALLY infected, or, some other problem, NOR do you know if this antibiotic is appropriate for the infection if you do have one!
You might also go to the drugstore and get some Oragel - that is a topical ointment that helps toothaches when you can't immediately get tot he dentist.
I agree. Dont self medicate. If your tooth really hurts, use some ambesol. The gel in the tube works better than the liquid. You could take a normal dose of Tylenol if it really hurts badly. (Normal being 2 every 4-6 hours depending on the type)
go get some clove oil from a nearby health food store. rub it on your gums. another thing is to get baby teething gel. this will numb the pain enough to get by. No one should give you advise on prescription drugs.,,,, You need to decide if the pain is sever enough for tylenol. Then follow the directions on the package.
Hi there.
Your toothache may not necessarily be due to an infection. So be cautious when self prescribing medications.
However, tooth pain is better managed with Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as Ibuprofen - trade names of Advil etc. Tylenol may also help, but I would start with the Advil. However, do not take Advil if you have stomach problems or a history of stomach bleeding. Take a small dose and see if it helps, if not increase your dose as long as you stay with in the safe limits noted on the bottle.
Good luck.
