Answers: This is the plan I try to give everyone out there and it does work!
If you want to do this for life you need to totally change your way of eating and exercising. This is not a diet rather than a healthy eating plan for life. So no more talking diet cause it means time limit.
Here are the golden rules:
Initially cut down to 1200 calories.
Exercise 6 times per week for 1.5 hours a day. Do three weight sessions and three cardio sessions.
Don't eat carbs after 4pm, never eat carbs within 2 hours of exercise or within 1 hour of exercise.
Drink 3 litres of water per day. You can have a green tea at the end of the day.
Limit your fruit in take to 2 pieces per day.
Never eat dinner after 6pm.
Adopt of low GI eating plan this is sustainable for life!
Follow this menu plan as a suggestion:
Breakfast 7am - 1 cup hot water w lemon
20 minutes later have a bowel of oats w water (no honey) OR
fruit salad w low GI yogurt
Snack 10am - pear or apple (both low GI)
Lunch 12.30pm - muligrain sandwich w 50g lean meat & salad (no butter)
Snack 3pm - low GI yogurt OR skim berry smoothie (no honey or banana) plenty of ice, 1/2 cup skim milk & 1/4 cup yogurt
Dinner 5.30pm - 120g grilled lean meat w spinach salad & mixed vegies (no whites, carbs) OR 3 egg white omlette with ham and tomato
Snack - 1 scoop of low cal low fat ice cream (if hungry)
Exercise is must be intense. Refer to www.bodybuilding.com for your weights routine. You can do a circuit class but this counts as one weights session. Never do weights two consecutive days have a cardio day in between.
Cardio needs to include running, boxing and spin. If your classes are less than 1 hour top it up with cardio before and after classes. You get the most benefits from exercise when your body is totally fatigued and this is when you see changes.
To maintain you can increase calories to 1500 and reduce exercise sessions to 3-4 times per week. If weight creeps up again due to holiday period etc.. go back to 1200 cal and 6 sessions again.
Good luck it worked for me it can work for anyone.
eat lots of fruits and vegetables...exercise daily...etc
Weight Watchers really, really works. I am a living advertisement for WW. It costs $12 per week, but really that's not much (you don't have to buy special suppliments or powders). It is healthy; my doctor recommended it for me (I'm a heart patient and needed to lose 25 pounds). Also, the WW program is something you can use for life.
They should be in the Yellow Pages.
It can be expensive, but Slim4Life is a good program, real food, and they guarantee 3-5 lbs/wk. I lost 85 in 10 mo.
Eat small meals all day (every couple hours). One meal can be just a piece of toast. It kicks your metabolism in!!
Yes, I do. I use the South Beach Diet in conjunction with some wonderful, nutritious health drinks and vitamin/mineral which keep your glycemic range in check. Please email me for the website: randynorman@yahoo.com
in the morning drink a cup of coffee, then brisk walk for a mile or so, the caffine will help your metablism start in the morning and the walking will help get ur body used to motion and heart pumping causing more burning of fat. then for lunch and dinner you should stick to low fat meats, like chicken or fish. veggies steamed are nice and keep their minerals.
Diets don't work!
I work with alot of women over 30 to help speed up their metabolisms and here are some things you can do right now:
Eat 5-6 x a day. By doing this you will speed up your metabolism, lose fat, and have more energy. If you starve yourself then your metabolims slows down.
Exercise with intensity: Most women don't do this and as a result they never get the results that they want.
Take 1-2 tbl. of flaxseed oil a day: This is a secret supplement that not to many women use and the benefits are amazing to boost your metabolism and help with menopause.
Increasing your protein intake: Most women don't eat enough protein which results in a sluggish metabolism

Medical studies show that a combination of diet and exercise is more effective in weight loss than just dieting. Diets fail us because we fail them. We are asking ourselves to avoid foods that we like and many times to eat foods we don't like. We are predisposed to failure when this is the case. Exercise, and gaining muscle mass is a great way to speed up the metabloism. The more calories you burn, the faster your body burns calories. Your appetite becomes more regular as well.
I lost 30 lbs. within 6 months when I started taking daily walks with my husband. We talked while we walked, and before we knew it, we were walking 3 miles a day. Walking is an easy, natural, low-impact form of exercise, and with consistency it works!
As for the dieting. I found that when I exercise, my craving for sweets goes down, and I crave vegetables and fruits instead. (My body probably wants to get more bang for the buck from hearty calories.) Good luck with the weight loss! I'm pulling for you!
First off, throw all the diet books and the like out of the window. The reason your doctor or dietitian doesn't recommend these books is down to one simple fact - they don't work. If one of them ever does it will revolutionize the world of dieting and be around for a long, long time unlike every other diet which fades into obscurity when the next marketing scheme comes along.
Your metabolism is governed by your lifestyle and a healthy diet and regular exercise will increase your metabolic rate.
The key to being healthy is to eat well and to take regular exercise. Don't cut anything out of your diet completely and don't overdo anything. As you've heard time and time again, the important thing is a 'balanced diet' and this includes lots of fresh fruit and vegatables but doesn't mean you can never eat the odd burger of chocolate biscuit.
Get into a healthy eating routine and have balanced meals at more or less set times. Eat a good breakfast to give you the energy to keep going through the day and avoid eating too much late at night. Three balanced meals during the day is far better than snacking all day and having a great big meal in the evening.
Try to ensure you take regular exercise, it doesn't need to be anything too strenuous as a brisk half hour walk each day will give you more than the recommended daily minimum. Some excellent all round exercises that anyone can take part in are swimming, cycling, walking and jogging.
The bottom line is balanced diet and exercise.
I agree with Heather about the info she gave you. A very good book is The Schwarzbein Principle. Women who have broken metabolism can heal with guidelines much like Heather recommended. Particularly peri and menopausal women. Good luck!
I go by the Weight Watchers program I was in in the 90's. I reached my goal within 3 months back then. But I went off the program and had gained 50 lbs since 1999. I gave my books to my sister so now I just kind of go by memory. I started Jan 3, 2006 eating more healthy foods, laying off fats, candy, chips, french fries, etc. and I take a supplement called Juice Plus which gives me all the nutrition I need from fruits and vegetables. I have lost 20 lbs. I am 59 years old. I feel great
If you go to this website, at the bottom of the page is a link to an ebook called fit after 40. It might give you some ideas.
Hey ! You are already on a good start by saying Good diet that works that has chicken, fruit, and vegetables . That is your diet healthy food choices . Find out what your daily intake of calories should be then start. Don't try any of those diets like Atkins. You will lose weight but put it back on because some of the foods you like are untouchable which you will eat, well overeat, once you are off the diet.Once you find out what your calorie intake is, include some of your favorite foods. You will have a better chance at success if you do. Last, 40 years old, slow weight lost. Don't get upset, be happy with about 2-3 pounds weight lost per week with exercise.
Eat several (4-6) small meals a day...your body will burn calories faster and build your metabolism in a short period of time.
(eat about every 2 hours)
The first 8-10 pounds you shed is water.
Meal suggestions:
1st: piece of fruit
2nd: string cheese, summer sausage, cottage cheese/yogurt
3rd: bowl of cereal
4th: soup/sandwich
5th: a good dinner-meat, potatoes/pasta/rice, veggie...your body needs carbs, protein and vitamins to stay healthy
6th: salad/raw veggies
Drink plenty of water
Drink milk or juice/water with every meal (no soda pop)
Stay away from munchies, fried & fatty foods.
Do simple exercise like walking/hiking...swimming and biking are great and fun to do.
I am also 40 years old and watched my metabolism just STOP. Always thin and athletic I just couldn't figure it out. A friend who is a geriatrician (doc for old people) recommended a book called Ready, Set, Go! Synergy Fitness . It is an exercise plan for older adults and explains a lot of why we gain weight as we age. (HGH declines - that's human growth hormone - it is a normal part of aging for this to decline, but if you do certain types of exercise you can increase your own HGH production). The book plainly explains exercise plans and only asks that you limit (not eliminate) processed sugars, particularly for 2 hours after you exercise.
I have been on th eplan for 6 weeks now. I have lost a total of 12 lbs and increased my muscle mass by 9%. I lost 7% body fat. I am back in a size 4 (from an 8-10). I have more energy, sleep better and my skin looks better than it has in 10 years. I am hooked.
Hope you look into the book. I got mine on Amazon for $12.95 - it goes for $17.95 at the book store.
Good Luck!
The best way to loose weight is to count your calories. You also need to combine exercise into eating lighter. Drinking water helps breakdown fats throughout the body. I started drinking water instead of all other drinks in December and i have lost about 28 pounds. if you combine all three techniques together it should do the trick.
Atkin's isn't just about eating meat.
If you read the Atkin's book, you do the 2 weeks of induction and then move onto more foods. If you follow the carb ladder, you will eventually add in more veggies, nuts and fruits.
Even induction includes vegetables. There is never a stage of Atkins that is without vegetables.
If you know Atkin's works, maybe just give your book a re-read. Continue up the carb ladder as recommended.
Eat healthy , that is all I can say .
