Sprinter Physique??

Question: Professional sprinters not only have great lower body muscle, but also upper body. Do they lift weights? Or does the sprinting grant them some or most of that muscle?
Answers: Ahhhh.. I love questions about sprinting. Sprinting is something that everyone should be doing. At least, everyone who has the ability to do so, that is....

So let's get to your question. The answer is yes, sprinters do lift weights - they typically perform high intensity, short duration weight routines such as squats and deadlifts. These work many muscles at once and there's strong evidence that they lead to increased sprint performance. Now, in terms of the act of sprinting itself, I wouldn't say that it builds massive muscles though it does work the fast twitch muscle fibers a great deal, but it results in positive adaptations in your body in terms of being able to store carbohydrates (fuel) more efficiently. It also does some pretty wicked stuff to your metabolism, elevating it like crazy for hours, if not days. Am I promoting sprinting enough yet? I hope so. Good Luck ~ Andrew
