Two bad knees, martial arts a bad idea??
Question: I have two bad knees, from injuries years ago. About two weeks ago, my left knee popped and I had a limp. I needed a brace which kept my leg straight, and some crutches to keep the weight off my knee.
I want to study Tae Kwon Do, and I'm wondering if this is a bad idea since I injured both knees and they both act up. My right knee hasn't acted up in a while, which is fine by me. Does anyone know if I can study a martial art with two bum knees?
Answers: as you would be at a beginning level, it is mostly about movement and stretching and any time you have an injury movement and stretching work to build up the muscles again so as long as you go slowly and dont move your knees out of your limits you should be able to...speak to the Sensei and they will be able to modify the class to suit your injury. I have taken Karate classes after being in a car accident, you just go slowly and stretch alot. good luck
um..yeah. bad idea hon.
Tai chi, perhaps. It's a stylyzed martial art which uses slow kata to achieve an inner harmony. I know that in Asia it is practiced by all age groups including the elderly, so your knees may actually benefit from the exercise.
There are even people in wheel chairs studying martial arts....go for it! Just make the instructor aware of your limitations.
I would stay away from any high impact type martial arts or you will only agrivate you injury. I studied several styles over the years. Some street effective others you just learned how do dance. I think like the person above that Tai Chi may be the way you should go.
