Has anyone ever heard of gastric bypass being fatal??
Answers: It's far more likely that a patient will die due to complications from the procedure than from the procedure itself. One of the biggest problems with gastric bypass is that many patients have huge problems absorbing nutrients into their bodies following the procedure. It's not uncommon (maybe 1-2%) for someone to essentially starve to sickness or even death of malnutrition following such a surgery. I know it sounds ironic for someone who is obese to starve - but if they cannot properly digest nutrients, it can be a major problem. Gastric bypass is a very dangerous procedure. It has, of course, also saved many people from far worse health complications. It is a big, life changing decision that should not be taken lightly.
any surgerey can be fatal
Every major surgery can be fatal. If you are considering it your doctor is required to explain all of the possible risks to you. Ask lots of questions and think long and hard before making a decision like this!!
The Surgery has a mortality rate of approximately 2% overall and 1% suffer immediate complications and death, another 1% will commonly have post-operative complications that lead to death within one month of surgery.
I lost a friend in December to complications after gastric bypass surgery. All surgery is risky. But so is being obese, which you should be before even CONSIDERING this operation.
YES. All surgery's can be fatal, from a simple root-canal to a complex heart surgery. Make sure you research gastric bypass before considering it.
yes
research has uncovered a higher-than-expected risk of death following surgery for obesity, even among younger patients. In a study of more than 16,000 subjects, more than 5 percent of men and nearly 3 percent of women aged 35 to 44 were dead within a year of the surgery.
Slightly higher rates were found in patients 45 to 54, and among patients 65 to 74 almost 13 percent of men and roughly 6 percent of women died. Among those aged 75 and older, half of the men and 40 percent of the women died.
yes it is sometimes fatal my dads getting it at the end of the month
it is a surgical procedure so it is as dangerous as every surgical procedure. i have read in scientific magazines that some of them were fatal BUT the mortality rate for this procedure is very low. most of the cases that it was fatal was because the people were morbidly obese so during the operation they bled really bad and that is usually the case. it's not considered as a major surgical procedure though. Best of luck.
Any surgery can be fatal, but it is rare for a gastric bypass to be. The first risks are those associated with general anesthesia. Although rare, a fatal reaction can occur. There is also an extremely small chance that the surgeon will screw up and the patient will bleed internally (but that really doesn't happen very often). After the surgery, eating too much can cause the stapled tissue to separate, which can result in the contents of the stomach spilling into the abdominal cavity. This typically requires emergency surgery, and is potentially fatal. However, all of these side effects are extremely rare.
But I'm not a doctor, so don't take my word for it - check with a health care professional (not here on YA) or do a google search and look for reliable sources.
After talking to a doctor about this sort of thing, the doctor told my wife the best solution for weight loss is diet and exercise as it has the lowest risk factors.
One of the risks for gastric bypass was death, so, I would say yes to your answer.
Oh yes it can. But then again it just depends if your a good canidate for the surgery, also all surgerys can be fatal.
Last I heard, about 1 in 100 ends in fatality either at, or sometime following surgery.
There are fatal risks with any surgery . I myself had the gastric bypass Dec 12 2005 and pulled through with no complications at all . I was 220 on Dec 12th and so far I have lost 54 pounds putting me down to 166 . MY goal is 100-115 pounds because I am short only 4'9 . I am doing great . I'm never sick . I do my protein drink everyday as well as my daily vitamins . MY Dr was amazed at how quick my weight was coming off where I didn't have a lot to lose compare to his other patients . That put a smile on my face . My husband says my self esteem has gone up since I have lost weight too . It's amazing to be giving my big clothes away . It's great ! Just remember hun there are risk with any surgery . After surgery though you need to do as your Dr says so you will feel better . It's the people most times not always but most times that eat whatever they want and do whatever they want that are sick and feeling like crap . Make sure you take you protein and viamins everyday it is very important for life !!!
