Should I have gastric by pass or lap band surgery??

Question: My weight is really affecting my health. Just wondering if anyone out there has any experiences with either, that they can relate. I'm trying to decide if I should have one of them done. I'll probably go with the lap band, if I do.
Answers: One of my closest friends in the whole wide world ballooned to almost 400lbs at one point in her life. She had tried having her jaws wired, and that didn't last, then she tried the gastric band thing, which worked to a point, but all it seemed to do was stop her putting on anymore weight, she didn't seem to lose any, and also, it didn't make her feel full so she still over-ate, but would just end up vomiting. When they removed the band they told her that she had somehow managed to stretch it aswell, so finally she decided to go for Gastric By-Pass surgery.
The thing with Gastric By-Pass surgery is that they will only do it in extreme cases where the person is morbidly obese and will basically die in the very near future if something is not done about it. Molly was morbidly obese and had a lot of other health issues like severe sleep apnia, she developed diabetes, blackouts, lung infections, ulcerations on her skin etc.
She had the surgery and over the course of a year lost almost half her body weight - she was a new person. One by one the health issues dispersed, but they were replaced with a couple of other things that she hadn't forseen!!!
She may have been half the size she was before the operation, but she still had all the skin! The amount of stretched out excess skin she had can now only be removed by surgery which she cannot afford because the Gastric Bypass surgery alone set her back around $100K. She literally had large saggy flaps of skin at all her joints (wrists, knees, shoulders ankles etc), her face looks like a deflated old balloon, and she has to take Vitamin B supplements (to name but one) for the rest of her life because one of the side-effects of a gastric bypass is that your system is no longer able to absorb most of the vitamins that are in your food.
There is also a bit of a toilet issue - because the food is broken down in a different way in the digestive system, the smell after she uses the toilet after a number 2 is sickeningly unearthly and very distinctive!
The thing is, it's been about 6 years now since she had the surgery, and even I have noticed that she is able to eat more and more as time goes on. The point of the gastric bypass is that it bypasses your normal stomach to this little pouch that they make for you out of a section of your normal stomach - this pouch can only hold 3 ounces of liquid or food. Molly has managed over the years to stretch this pouch, so that she can now eat quite large hearty meals! I have noticed the weight creeping back on her again too!
Depending on your own personal age, current weight, and any previous solutions you have tried, I would really consider surgery as a last option!
If you really want to go ahead with it you should speak to your GP who will refer you to a specialist. They will be able to explain everything properly to you and introduce you to some of their previous patients who have had the surgery and you can get their own personal views on the matter!
Whatever option you choose, I hope it all works out for you and you live a long and healthy life!
how about a sensible diet and some exercise.
My brother went with lap band....he went to dozens of meetings and did a lot of research and lap band's risks were far fewer than gastric bipass. Also, the bowel problems associated with bipass made it unreasonable. That said you should consult with a physician about what is best for you. Maybe even attend some of the information meetings. Those were really helpful for him as I remember. Good luck, it's a life changing surgery.
All I can say is don't do it. I have a weight problem as well but I have found that by not skipping meals like I was doing before, increasing my physical activities and eating smaller meals instead of 3 big ones I have been able to lose some weight. It takes time, patience and determination.

Yes there are health risks to being overweight, but there are also health risks to the surguries you are talking about. I suggest if you are really serious about them do your research first. Know everything there is to know about these procedures. Know what the stats are on infection and death.
i dont know about which you should do but i know this lady who did the gastric bypass and she looks like a skeleton now and says she got full with half of a chicken nugget and has to inject herself everyday with vitamins and if she has any sugar her body can go into shock she does not look nice though, i lost almost 100 lbs in about a year taking precribed phentermine pills they really work and also that lady had to have surgery again to take off all that extra skin because she lost it(weight) so fast and had to have breast implants and face lift she went nuts because she wanted to look perfect now she looks like michael jackson so i think its better for you not to have the surgery and do the pills because its slower and with exersing with the pills you wont have that extra skin.
