How do you stop yourself from loosing concentration or feeling sleepy when you are bored in a lecture??
Question: I'm worried I'm missing lots of the sylabus, but I can't concentrate even if I've had lots of sleep!!
Answers: I draw the lecture. Every word that stands out I write down then I doodle around it. Most of my doodles actually have to do with the words. This keeps me awake and in the end I sort of have notes that may help me remember what was said.
I have a bad time concentrating and this is the only thing that works for me. The caffeine makes me jittery and makes my mind wander. I may be awake but I am not thinking about the lecture.
tell yourself jokes to wake yourself up.
Maybe you need ADD meds.
drink a cup of coffee or a large hot chocolate (or other caffinated drink), or have a chocolate bar (or other food with caffine in it) just before class.
I like to chew gum. Or what I do is pinch myself when I start to dose off.
I am the same way with certain instructors. I started doing homework in class to keep myself awake.
Close your eyes. Think about lying in bed realxing zzz...
Think of something that would normally get you excited if you were in the presence of it. for example... Imagine you just baked a chocolate cake and the aroma is driving you mad... doesn't that get you excited to eat it right away? If baked goods doesn't work for you... think of boyssss
Learn to do 'mind-mapping' style of note-taking. It helps you learn the material better, listen better, and make connections more intuitively.
It also allows you to literally 'doodle' as you take notes! Its great!
Hi there. If you do not have assigned seats, sitting right at front, in front of the instructor will help you stay awake. How about drinking a coke or coffee right before the class? Also, if you feel like you're getting sleepy, excuse your self, go to the bathroom, rinse your face, walk around for a minute and go back into the class. Hopefully that will help you feel refreshed.
I know this sounds horrible, but picture your teacher or speaker doing to most private, but common things. lol, just try not to laugh out loud!
haha,
Constance
Don't just look at one spot. look at the general area, but move your eyes around a bit. keep yourself interested. don't black out. sorry, but that is all the help that i can give you. i have the same prob.
Write down the positive reasons you're in this class and imagine the the lecturer is waering a funny hat, is your favorite celebrity, or is naked.....
The best answer for this question is to go to the window open it, and stay there for a couple of minutes to take some fresh air then if you want you could also drink a glass of cold water and so you will be fresh again.
when you start to doze.
hold your foot up about an icnh from the ground. raise it when you get sleepier, It shouldjerk you awake.
If this does not work then shake yourself, strench ( like move your arms) humor yourself or what I like to do is carry my Ipod and put one earphone and listen to it. Play and upbeat song and stay awake.
but know this, when the body is tired almost nothing can keep it awake. are you sleeping enough? dont party too hard. I've seen the pictures...
;-)
having too much sleep can cause Sleep Dependency. You need to drink lots of water and have lots of breakfast.
Involve yourself in the subject, immerse yourself and let go...Ask yourself, What is it that I really enjoy in this subject? .next What is it, if i could enjoy, that i really appreciate about class in general and about this subject, in particular? next ask with dynamic felings, why do i love this subject so much, as to be deeply passionate and totally involved in this?'Act as if you really had these qualities, get this act together and do it for 3 days and the habit will form, continue till it becomes natural. My Best wishes for a bright and sunny student life.
i often find myself drifting off during my lectures untill i started taking water in with me. lots of water keeps the brain stimulated. but if your falling asleep even though you had loads of sleep maybe you should see your doctor, they diabetes is linked to things like that. but if all else fails you have always got pro plus.
Imagine you can hear the thoughts of people in the room, look at them and imagine that they are bored to and they are thinking about something stupid.
If you can't pay attention during class, try getting a cheap little tape recorder, like those little hand-held ones. Let it run during the class and then just listen to the lecture when you have time later, like when you're driving in your car or cleaning your apartment or doing laundry or something. Some of those little recorders can record pretty well from far away and you can just keep it at your desk. Others need to be closer to the speaker, so let your teacher know you're recording the lecture to refer to for later, and leave it at the front of the room with them (on their table or podium). Just don't forget to pick it up and take it with you after class!
Concentrate on what is being said. Try to put it into your own words or perspective!
What I find really helps is TAKING NOTES. When you are writing you can't fall asleep.
Try chewing MINTY gum or taking in deep breaths. Having some sort of rag/cloth with a strong mint oil to inhale is good!
Take notes...write what the teacher is saying (as much as possible) If you can't bear to focus take a small tape recorder and record the lecture and listen to later. Take a rubber band and put it around your wrist. Snap it when you begin to doze....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz
have a cup of tea or coffee before entering the class, that hopefully will keep u awake. luckily it works with me. so try it out.
Remind yourself of what a total waste of space you are, how there are people out there who would sell their souls for a chance of the education you are getting and you are taking it for granted.
You do not deserve the opportunity that has been handed to you.
You are a thief: stealing time and energy from others, taking a place in that lecture that could be used by another who is more willing to work and apply themselves
to the studies.
You should be ashamed.
Now... WAKE UP and take full advantage.
Stop being a drifter and a passenger.
Do some work. Focus.
You will never have this opportunity again.
You can borrow money but not time. Once it is gone it is gone forever.
Have good long think and if you decide that I am wrong and that have no obligation to yourself/family/your future/your lecturers/life then get out of college or wherever you are and give somebody else a chance!
Reasonable?
It's your call... the will to succeed is in you...
so find it and stop looking for 'easy' external solutions...
You should get the glasses that Homer Simpson had...the ones with the painted-on awake eyes...that way you can Fool everyone!! he he Couldn't resist...I need them too...
chew a gum containing mint tomorrow in that morons class and u will say. its working!
