How can I tell if I'm allergic to a cat??

Question: I just got a new Persian cat. Previously I owned a shorthair cat and wasn't allergic to it at all. With the Persian cat, I can't tell. Ever since he moved in, I think I'm a little bit itchier and my throat seems a bit more hoarse at times, but then again it might be my imagination.

To experiment, I stuck my nose in his fur and breathed in and out for like 30 seconds. This didn't cause my eyes to water at all, but it caused me to sneeze like 10 times, caused my nose to get a little stuffy (although I can still breath through it), and I was a tiny bit wheezier in my breathing. Is this evidence of an allergy, or is it something that would happen to anyone who breathed in a persian cat's fur?

If I'm allergic then I should probably return the cat, but if I'm not then I can keep it.
Answers: It sounds like you may have a mild allergy but that doesn't mean you have to get rid of the cat. I am allergic to cats and I have two. My allergies are worse with kittens, and my doctor said that is normal.

I keep them out of my bed and clean a lot. I take medication when my allergies are really bad, but I am able to live comfortably with them most days. In the beginning I took medication more often, and I always need medication when I have a cold since my cat allergy is mainly respiratory.

I used to have to give the cats baths, but I have adjusted to them so they don't need them anymore.

I had allergy testing (skin prick and injections under the skin) done before getting a cat because I had a reaction to a kitten in the past. The test came back negative, so I went ahead and got a cat thinking that maybe the kitten had something on it since we rescued it from the outside underneath our patio (recent construction and was trapped). No. I am allergic to cats, but really allergic to kittens. If i even go in a pet store my throat closes up, but I do fine with my own cats.
I have cat and horse allergies and I take Loratadine (Claritin) and it works great for that, I get itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and my asthma will start to act up occasionally, but the Claritin, well I buy the cheap generic Loratadine and it's a 24 hour medicine, it works great! I can't give up my cats hahaha!
Go sniff one. If you sneeze, you're allergic. Run!
If you don't, you're not allergic. Yay!
Well, you can go to an allergist and get an allergy test done for it. But having said that my test was $1,300 with $800 covered by insurance and involved 156 injections into my arms over three hours.
