Are there actually more people allergic to peanuts now then before??
Question: Or are we just more aware of it?
Every time I watch t.v. or listen to the radio, I hear a different ad in regards to peanuts.
Mars bars (in Canada at least) no longer have peanuts in them. Certain food producers have now added labels on their food stating that they are 100% peanut free. Kids are no longer allowed to bring any peanut products to school.
What has caused so many more kids to be allergic to peanuts? Is it because they weren't exposed to it at an earlier age?
Answers: There were problems before, you just didn't hear about them as much. The incidence of peanut allergy is on the rise. The best theory I've heard as to why this is occuring is called the Hygiene Hypothesis. Basically, this says that our society is obsessed with anti-bacterial products and we don't allow our kids to get the same childhood illnesses as we had when we were kids. This lack of common illnesses causes the child's immune system to go down an allergic pathway since it is not busy fighting infections. There have been multiple studies that show that kids that grow up on farms, have a certain illness in childhood, or even those in daycare or with older siblings have less allergies overall than other kids that don't. It is a very interesting situation we have created in our clean environment. See- mom was right- dirt IS good for you!
It could be environmental but it is definitely on the rise.
I've noticed it as well.....I don't ever remember anyone being allergic to peanuts when I was growing up.
Weird huh?
it is more common now but it has less to do with the actual peanuts and more to do with the way they are processed- peanuts are actually one of the most processed foods on the planet- they do so much to the plants to keep them from bugs and other environmental problems that might reduce production, then they add insult to injury by what they do to preserve them- our bodies are not meant to have to digest and process all those chemicals and alterations to natural foods that were made specifically for our bodies.
It sure is wierd. i am 29 years old and about 8 years ago found out that I was allergic to peanuts. As a child I always enjoyed peanuts and never had a reaction! It sure is wierd though.
