Is there any way to totally eliminate cat dander from my home??
Question: I have had chronic hives for the last seven months. The same amount of time that we have lived in a new house. I recently went to the doctor for allergy tests and found out that I am highly/severly allergic to cat dander. This is news to me because I have had a cat for the last 5 years. We no longer have the cat, but I need a way to sanitize my home. HELP!!!!!
Answers: most dander lives in the carpet and furniture. Have a professional cleaner come in and clean, as well as your curtains (which you may have to send out). Tell them ahead of time why you're cleaning and make sure they guarantee their work will eliminate these allergens .
Change the filters in your heating/AC if you have central air and consider adding an electronic filter to the system.
Stock up on claritan or some other brand of allergy pill until you get it done.
Then figure what changed in your life that you suddenly have allergies. For me it was gaining weight. When I hit the magic number I suddenly started having problems with dust, dogs, horses, things I never had a problem with for 50 years.

I would contact an allergy doc...but I would assume one of those pet dander HIPA vacs would do the trick!
Steam clean carpets, drapes, sofa, etc, You might also have an allergic reaction to dust mites. That is usually the most common allergy that people mistake for pet allergies. Try another doctor. WebMD has good info on pet allergies and dust mite removal.

You're going to have to get a couple of friends to help you give your house an agressive cleaning. Wash your curtains and bedding (including your padding), dust your furniture with a damp cloth or with something like Endust, soak and wipe down your blinds, vacuum and shampoo your carpets and furniture. You might even consider cleaning your heating ducts and cleaning or replacing the filters in your furnace.

from one cat allergy sufferer to another, i feel for you. i have been told that it takes about four months for all the dander to stop causing a problem if you have an allergy to it. you can vaccum and throw out the bag. you might try an air purifier. don't forget about places you don't normally think of cleaning...curtains, blinds, shower curtains, along baseboards, even the walls can carry the dander or the hair of the cat. good luck and sorry about you having to get rid of the cat
Studies show it can take 2 years to remove cat dander from the home. You have to shampoo you carpets adn drapes with anti-allergy cleansers. YOu have to bleach all the walls, windows and hard surfaces. YOu have to wash ALL fabrics in the home including bedding, towels, clothes. Cat hair gets everywhere and it is barbed to stick into stuff. It is not the actual hair itself however that causes the allergy but rather the sebum on the hair from the cat. This should solve you problem. I too have a severe cat allergy and have tried this successfully.
