Why do people yawn???????

Question: i yawn alot.
HELP A SISTA out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Answers: I think this deserves to be a featured question. Here are a few theories and a link below:

Everybody yawns - from unborn babies to the oldest great-grandparent. Animals do it, too. But why, exactly, do people and animals yawn? No one knows for sure. But there are many theories (ideas) about why people yawn.

One is that when we are bored or tired, we just don't breathe as deeply as we usually do. As this theory goes, our bodies take in less oxygen because our breathing has slowed. Therefore, yawning helps us bring more oxygen into the blood and move more carbon dioxide out of the blood.

Yawning, then, would be an involuntary reflex (something we can't really control) to help us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Sounds good, but other studies have shown that breathing more oxygen does not decrease yawning. Likewise, breathing more carbon dioxide does not increase yawning. Hmmm. Now what?

Another theory is that yawning stretches the lungs and lung tissue. Stretching and yawning may be a way to flex muscles and joints, increase heart rate, and feel more awake.

Other people believe that yawning is a protective reflex to redistribute the oil-like substance called surfactant (say: sur-fak-tunt) that helps keep lungs lubricated inside and keeps them from collapsing. So, if we didn't yawn, according to this theory, taking a deep breath would become harder and harder - and that would not be good!

But there is one idea about yawning that everyone knows to be true. It seems contagious. If you yawn in class, you'll probably notice a few other people will start yawning, too. Even thinking about yawning can get you yawning. How many times have you yawned while reading this article? We hope not many!
Cause they are tired, or they are getting up from a non restful sleep. Being tired makes this happen.

But im not sure what happens when you yawn. I think something to do with low oxyen level.
They get tired, want to go to sleep, or sometime they just get bored.
becuauze it symbaols that there sleepy!
I think...not entirely sure about this, but I believe yawning is due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.? Answering a question with a question here.
Someone did tell me recently if you take several long, deep breaths, this can prevent the yawning.
People yawn because it feels good. People yawn for the same reason they stretch. It has nothing to do with increasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. It's a reflex.

its a bit like the hiccups or blinking.theres no real reason for it.and its very-yawns- contagious.lol
Because people dont get enough sleep and they go to sleep to late
You yawn due to a lax of oxegyn, mostly to the brain. This can be caused from being tired, it can be caused by allergies, and it can be caused by asthma. I had allergy tests done this past year, and they said most yawns are actually due to allergies, or a need for more air. I tend to start yawning very frequently before an asthma attack, and the only way to slow down the yawns is to take one of my inhalers. If you find you're not tired, and you're still yawning a lot, talk to him about the possibility of breathing problems or allergies. Good Luck! :)
to get oxagen to their brain
Nobody actually knows what the yawn does. The most widely-accepted theory is that people yawn when they are not getting enough oxygen (when you feel tired your breathing slows, so you're depleteing your body of O2). Opening your mouth isn't the only thing that happens when you yawn-- your diaphram moves downward, expanding your lungs, which forces you to take a deep breath.

There IS a hole in the theory. If it really is due to a lack of oxygen, taking a big breath when you have the urge to yawn should stop the yawn, right? Wrong. Doesn't work. Try it next time.
Your brain needs some extra air at that precise moment at that time. When you are tired your brain needs more air.
I beleive it is when there is a lack of oxygen getting to the brain.
Yawning is caused by the lack of oxygen to the brain
wouldnt believe s@&t that comes from msnbc.......
Yawning helps us process fluids and oxygen, note how your eyes water slighty and your mouth salvates as you yawn, yawning is contagious too, try it. Its like a natural oil change for your chest neck and head. gets newer fresher air and salivia circulated-excreted.
Lack of Oxygen. Maybe.
You yawn when you are tired, That's your brain's way of waking itself up. When you take in more oxegen it makes your brain more active.
probably b/c ur too tired or bored is the best explanation as everyone else had explained here!! so try to get more sleep n c what happens!
