Maybe that he cannot continue travelling with his dead wife. They have gone through a lot (climbed a steep mountain), but that road has ended and he needs to find a new one, and a new travelling companion.

What it means is that he can not follow her down her road .... The road ends because he can not go with her where she is...SHe left this world to continue out what her life path was on the otherside... But just becasue she is gone from his eyes doesn't mean she is gone all together, she still walks amoungest him.... only because he will not let her go.. She must be released so that she knows he will be alright with out her.. She must go to the otherside... he must stay and continue his path his road here on earth for its in his life path that he chose.
