Question: Hi i need your help does anyonw know how those who have been involved in a traumatic brain injury react during awakening;do they still preserve their feelings of love and passion or are they apathetic with famiyl and lovers;pls im in a real dilemma as my boyfriend is in a coma for more than 1 month and i wish he would wake and feel the same about me
Answers: Hi,
I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I'm sure you are just desperate for someone to reassure you that everything will be okay, but, these injuries are all different. Some people wake up with basically nothing different about them at all (once they recover) and some people have major functional problems.
One thing that is commonly affected in traumatic brain injury is emotions or the ability to control emotion. Like some who have been injured might cry when they don't even mean to cry, etc. Luckily, there is SO much therapy available for people who have been injured in this way.
I know it will be very hard, but for now, maybe you can just take it day-by-day and, as much as possible be with your boyfriend and the same during his recovery. This is just a situation where only time will tell. Who knows, your relationship may be stronger than ever. Really, no one will be able to tell you what will happen. Let's just pray for him to wake up for now and hopefully, since I assume he is young, he will make an excellent recovery.
I put some links to fact sheets about traumatic brain injury and how to deal with it; not to bring you down, but just so you can know what to expect and how you can help yourself to feel more in control (I usually wouldn't put a link to anything that wasn't directly from the government or a big organization, but the second link is a book written by a doctor. I was a hospital social worker for years and this book does seem to have some good ideas about how to handle the hospital experience and what to expect. Just take what makes sense to you and leave the rest).
You can always ask to speak to the hospital or rehabilitation social worker to find out about support groups for people with T.B.I. in your area. Remember, with support groups, you don't have to talk if you don't want to, you can just listen at first. I think it would really help you though to be around other people that are going through or have gone through what you are dealing with.
I wish you and your boyfriend all the best. Take care of yourself as you go through this - please!
they wont remember you.
EVER.
I would think unless he cant remember his past his feelings would be the same, unless you did something that put him in that state (like whacked him in the head with a frying pan) Good luck, and I hope he makes it ok.
Brain trauma is an individual thing. Not everyone goes through the exact same damages. There isn't a Pat answer for you. Pray for the best. I wish the best for him and hope you achieve peace. Good luck.
