Do you think there would be as much mentalillness as there is if people could earn a decent wage and have sex??
Question: I'm curious. I think that a lot of people are mentally ill because they have nothing else worth doing lined up.
Answers: In 1890 Chocolate King Hershey built the utopian city Hershey in Illinois to prove that very thing. I am sure there was a difference in mental illness rates back then. Remember cultural rates reported in America show that whites have twice as much mental illness as non-whites today. So cultures can make a difference. Would it be cost effective to give patients sex and money and no pills. I am going to say yes but who will say OK.
No, its partly biological and genetic. People don't decide to become mentally ill because they are bored.
Look at it this way....there are some mentally ill people that make a decent wage AND have sex...but they are still mentally ill.
Oh- two things:
1. Not everyone who gets angry is bipolar (didn't you just contradict yourself- when you said that everyone with bipolar is overdiagnosed? What did you just do? Overdiagnosed a bunch of people for ranting.)
2. What people do not realize is that by faking Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) in non-death penalty cases, your punishment is worse. NGRI patients tend to spend a longer time locked up in a mental hospital and get more intensive supervision after release. So, faking mental illness is not advantageous. Also, with the training and experience of psychologists, its very difficult to malinger. Are there some people out there who fake mental illness? Yes. But very few. Most people with mental illness have a mental illness.
If someone is bored and horny and decides to make up a mental illness to fulfill their lives, couldn't that in and of itself be a symptom of mental illness?
WHAT, you are mentally ill
YOU are crazy for thinking something so idiotic
So if I am a priest, I don't make much money and don't have sex, then I must be mentally ill? WHOA! What a concept.
yes there would be.
How about if we just stop idots from procreating!
Having worked with the mentally ill, I can tell you that it has absolutely nothing to do with money or sex. If it did, I think we would have a lot more. It's biological, not psychological. People like to use the illness scapegoat for their bad choices, but real illness is biochemical in basis.
I think mental illness increases as lifestyles improve. If people had to struggle everyday to find food and shelter there wouldn't be time for mental illness. Those people would be left to die. America wastes too much money trying to help these people. Our biology is survival of the fittest. If you're mentally ill, I have no sympathy for you.
There is too much mental illness ( I believe) due to what we put in our bodies. Our bodies do not have Mcdonalds or Taco Bell requirements - but good nutrition will help with any illness - it has been proven time and time again. Eat well - feel well. You don't put anything but gas in your car - if you did - it would not run well or not at all. You don't put gas to grow plant - they would die . . . . .Think about what you put into your body
I don't agree with you, mental illness isn't the choice of poor or lazy people. But, there would be less war, if everyone had a good job and sex.
THAT'S TO DEEP FOR US MAYBE YOU SHOULD SEE A DR
sometimes people get hit on the head which causes them to become mentally ill. there's nothing that can be done about it.
Hey, @ d-Bo! No sympathy? Well, when you someday are struck with an illness and are sitting in your own feces because you are not mentally capable of realizing that you just released your bowels, but have suddenly grasped why it seems to be getting warmer, do NOT be surprised if no one has enough compassion and sympathy for you to clean you up.
Sigmund Freud wrote many papers on the effects of the lack of sex. During his time it was normal for young people (especially young women) to suppress their natural desires and restrain from sexual activity.
Because this is our strongest instinct, suppression and restraint lead very often to some sort of mental illness, because we are not allowing are bodies to do what they were meant to do.
I understand the point you are trying to make here- if people didn't have to worry about getting enough money or having satisfying, meaningful relationships, then they wouldn't be as sad because there'd be two less things to stress about.
People who /are/ depressed definitely feel that they have nothing else worth doing lined up. It's not the other way around because, like other people answered, depression is partly biological and partly genetic.
An interesting thought, but be careful about identifying causal relationships! People might take it wrong and tear you a new one.
I think you have a point. My partner in BI-POLAR and I have borderline personality disorder and Depression. I don't take your point as offensive. I think that too many people want titles for disorders and that these problems have always been here. But since we must fix everyone now and save the world rather than ourselves, we just have managed to create a labled world.
We all have issues! Some needing medications to percieve the normal world and others needing a drink. LOL
The sex and money just help ease the situation temporarily.
I think your question is actually very interesting. Whilst mental illness can be genetic and often has biological groundings in that some people may be pre-disposed to mental illness, often the 'triggering' of mental illness is due to environmental influences. I dont think it is that people dont have anything else 'worth doing lined up', but it could be that they are unhappy with their current situation, especially in a job they are unhappy with, which may, over time, result in mental illness, particularly depression. Someone who has had longterm troubles at work may end up being signed off with depression stemming from the stress the problems have caused them, so you are justified in assuming that some mental illness is related to work. However many people earn a poor wage and are very happy, so other factors are of course important too. Its unlikely that low wage alone would cause mental illness, but it may contribute to its onset.
As for the lack of sex, again this is interesting. I once read an excellent book called 'Saints, Scholars and Schizophrenics' which looked at the very high numbers of Schizophrenia in men living in a small area of Ireland and indeed the Schizophrenic men were all celibate. This is a very extreme example but I think it warrants a mention as the book was suggesting that the virginity of these men had contributed to their Schizophrenia. However, again it is important to consider all of the inputs that contribute to mental illness, so after any biological dispositions, it is possible that someone who lacks sex in their life may be likely to develop a mental illness. Although I dont necessarily think its the actual act of having sex that would prevent it. If someone doesnt get any sex they may feel unloved, unattractive and frustrated which again over time may lead to feelings of worthlessness and depression, which may then lead to future relationship problems, which in return may contribute to a further lack of sex and hence deepen the mental problems. For both the work and the sex factors, developing a mental illness from problems with these may result in further problems and a worsening mental health, a catch 22 I guess.
Overall I think your question is possible as these factors COULD contribute to mental illness, but are unlikely to ever be the sole cause, which is important to note. Correlational studies are what is used to test theories like yours, and whilst they may indeed find relationships between low wages/lack of sex and mental health issues, they DO NOT imply cause and effect, as it may be the reverse of what your theory suggests that is the case. For example, many depressed people have a very low sex drive and the depression may CAUSE the lack of sex, or it could be that someone already displaying mild mental illness has difficulty keeping a job/motivating themselves to work, and the mental illness results in them only having low paid jobs. I'm sure you understand. On the whole, mental illness can result from a number of things and can have an affect on just as many things, so its difficult to assess what's the cause and what's the effect.
All the best.
