What kind of a doctor does one see for ADHD? Psychologist or psychiatrist? Why??
Answers: Both are fine. Moreover in some states Psychologist can prescribe medication but not in many. I would opt to see a psychologist first because taking medication for a disorder such as ADHD is not the only cure. Psychiatrist will most likely prescribe medication but will not work with the whole person. There are other issues involved when a person has ADHD such as coping with school, work, home life, socialization skills, participating in at risk behaviors, fighting, and other issues. You have to be able to understand your diagnosis and how to treat it. Arm your self with as much knowledge as possible. Good Luck
Either is fine, though a Psychologist can not, by law, use chemical therapies because they do not have the ability to prescribe medications. I suggest a psychiatrist.
A Psychiatrist, they can dispense the proper medication.
Psychologist are by LAW not licensed to dispense medication.

A Psychiatrist prescribes medication and diagnoses people with different disorders, such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, etc. A psychologist typically does testing and some talk therapy. You would probably want to see a psychiatrist in conjunction with a licensed therapist. I don't know that you would have much need for a psychologist when struggling with ADHD.
go to your regular doctor let him decide if the person needs help and he can refer if needed.it may be many differant things.
go to doc he will refer you for testing, there is a battery of questions they will ask- I know, I just had my son in for this- he is combo add/adhd- Strattera works wonders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the main difference is that a psychiatrist is a medical doctor while a psychologist has his or her phd. either is extensively trained and adequate to deal with adhd, but if you're looking for treatment with medication, you should seek out the phychiatrist. though if insurance and money is an issue the pshycologists tend to be much cheaper per session and can recommend you to a pshychiatrist later who will prescribe you the medication.
A psychiatrist can give you medication.
A psychologist is for therapy, and cannot give you the actual medication. They may have an opinion which they think is best for you after seeing you. That which you can pass along to the psychiatrist.
A session with a psychiatrist is usually short and about how the meds are working.
A session with a psychologist is longer and includes therapy such as behavioral or cognitive.
So, if you defin. want to go on meds, you must eventually see the psychiatrist, as they are actually MD's.
If you want to try to deal with it in other ways, see a psychologist.
You can also see both.
first of all, who made the ADHD diagnosis? In my community the Mental Health clinic works in conjunction with the schools; they have special testing and special programs for this disease. This is done by psychologists and psychiatric social workers. If medication is needed they are referred to the psychiatrist for a medication evaluation and the psychiatrist follows up with the patient monitoring the medication. It is imperative that the patient see professionals who have training and experience with this type of disorder.
Go to a psychologist because they are the only ones who can do the testing and diagnose you, psychiatrists these days do not do the testing, they mostly prescribe medication, I have to sons that I had to take to a psychologist to get them diagnosed, Our family doctor referred us to him, then the psychologist will call your family doctor and give him the results of the tests and suggest to them to prescribe you the following medications, either adderall, ritilin, concerta, or what ever is appropiate, there are a few others, due to the abuse of these all these types of meds from people it is hard to get a doctor to just prescribe them with out a diagnosis, the psychologist that we used did special testing with my boys using the computor, then there are also a list of questions they as.
