Is an autistic child eligable to recieve any type of financial assistance??
Question: My 3 yr. old has been diagnosed with autism. He has gotton out of the house once and is constantly trying to unlock doors. I have since quit my job to be home with him. My husband is in the army and is supporting the family. Just want to know if my son can recieve any funds to help with his special needs.
Answers: I am assuming that you are residing in the US. Although there are some differences among the various states as to what financial assistance programs are offered based on disability, you should certainly begin the sometimes arduous process of applying for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, for your child. Depending on your state, you may be able to do this through your state Health and Human Services office (or whatever name is used, e.g. Department of Social Services, etc.), but more likely you should contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) office that serves the area in which you live. When you contact your State government Human Services, be sure to ask them for information about assistance. He may qualify as well for Medicaid. Keep in mind that your family income and assets will be used in determining his eligibility for assistance.
The front part of you phone book most likely has a section devoted to phone numbers for all kinds of social service agencies and programs, including federal (like SSA) and State government. I would also go to your State's web page (in my state, it is www.state.nh.us, and yours will probably be something very similar) and look for links to social and community services, educational services, etc.
In summary, your State government is really the place to start, since they can connect you most quickly with local services, including possibly financial assistance if you qualify. Good Luck.
Your child could benefit for Social Security
Try applying for Social Security Disability. Most likely, you will be turned down the first time you apply (they only have a certain percentage per year that they are allowed to approve.) once that happens continue to appeal the case and get a lawyer involved if necessary. It takes a lot of patience but if this is an ongoing problem that will keep him disabled for an extended period of time, he is deserving of the extra financial income. If he is on Medicaid, call your local Medicaid office and ask them to assist you or your insurance company. They have all kinds of resources available that they don't always advertise.
If you are in the UK. You can apply for Disability Living Allowance for him (though I think you cant do that til he is 5). When you come to claim make sure you put in as many details as you can.. it sounds like your child would quailify for care and mobility components (special precautions when travelling with him). I have been claiming DLA for my own 10 year old since he was 5. I dont think that there is anything you can claim before then .. if your husband is in the Army contact SAFA for social support and advice. Good luck
A friend of mine has an autistic son. He lives in California and says he won't leave the state because they have such very good programs for his son. I would think that you should be able to get assistance from the Army. I don't know about them just giving you funds, but there should be some programs for that depending on where you live. I know my friend's son gets speech therapy and also he gets rides to school. He is about three and I don't think that he has spoken yet.
I'd recommend safety things, hazard items, that go on door knobs, lock or keep cabinet doors closed, etc.. They're safety locks, etc, that can keep everything child proof.
Yes, your child is eligible for financial assistance. You can take the child's reports/records to your local disability office. They also may re-assess your child though, with their psychiatrists, psychologists, and so forth.
Best wishes,
