Am I am candiate for laser surgery??
Question: I am only 28 and my vision has been poor my entire life. Back then they said they wouldn't do anything. Doctors now say that if it was corrected when I was 9, it would not be this bad. I
am -13 and -15. I wear thick glasses but I prefer my contacts. During the day, I can drive without them but I don't try to. The doctors always say how bad my eyes are. Any HELPFUL info would be appreciated. Serious replies please. :)
Answers: I'm an eye surgeon , many will refuse to operate on your eyes unless u want to decrease the amount of myopia and still wear a smaller glasses or contacts [ but this is not what u want ] in my opinion , stick to contacts , never consider phakic IOL , it's very good but not in your case , you are very young for it .
feel free to e-mail me if u want to know anything .
If you've had the same prescription for at least a couple years, you're almost certainly a candidate. Barring special eye difficulties, anyone who's prescription is fixed can get surgery.
If the number is constant for a period of 6 months, you could consult an eye doctor. From http://www.eye-care.in/lasikeyesurgery.h...
You really need to have a consultation with a refractive surgeon. Some surgeons may not wish to take your case due to the degree of myopia that you have....the main reason being, your corneal thickness and the amount of cornea that needs to be ablated to bring you to a glasses/contacts free state. The consultations are typically free, because not everyone is a candidate for refractive surgery.
I had PRK and was borderline with a corneal thickness of 500 and a correction of -8.25 and -7.75.
There is also a newer technology called the phakic IOL, or implantable contact lens that you may wish to look into. It's not laser, and I am not as familiar with this procedure because the refractive surgeon in my office is not doing this procedure yet.
I have put links for different procedures to correct myopia. Read through them. They do get somewhat technical, but write down questions to ask your potential surgeon about the pros and cons of each procedure, and which they are adept in performing and for how long, all according to YOUR eye measurements.
Without the consultation and the measurements of your eyes, it really is not possible to say whether you will be a candidate or not...perhaps not LASIK or PRK, but there are other options. Just ask lots of questions to your surgeon, and if you do not feel comfortable with their level of experience, ask if they know of someone in your area that has experience in the non-laser procedures that they could recommend. A good surgeon will give you this kind of recommendation...they have a network of colleagues (if they won't give you other names, I would not let them touch my eyes if that procedure was not the best for me!).
I hope I have been able to direct you to some information so you can ask questions...and do ask as many questions as you need!!...for what is going to be best for your eyes after your measurements have been taken and the recommendations of the surgeon.
Good luck!
Laser eye surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.
Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
