Confused about lazy eye??
Question: In the last two years i have become short sighted, my left eye is a lot worse in terms of seeing than my right, however my right eye seems to be going lazy and leaning inwards like its tired and can't stay straight. It seems like a lazy eye, not really that noticable and not like it when i wake up only at the end of the day and i think it's because its signifcantly better in sight than the left eye, however the left eye is dead straight.
I've read that to train it put a patch over the good eye, but does that mean my good eye is the eye that is straight but can't see, or my good eye is the eye that is a bit wonky and can see alot more than the other??
Answers: go to eye doctor quickly , tell him about every thing , know ur option , ur case is very treatable
there are eyeball muscle strengthening exercises you can do, you should consult your eye doc for those
Anytime people ask health related questions it's hard to have a cut and dry answer without more history. If you have ruled out central nervous system dysfunction by your doctor, or nerve entrapment, then I would look for a certified neuromuscular therapist trained in the St. John method. Sometimes, and I do stress sometimes, the intrinsic muscles of the eye get hyper tonic making one eye stray to one side, up or down. The treatment for this is quite simple, if indeed that is what is happening. If you need help finding someone in your area I may be able to help. See www.azpainsoutions.com and send me an email.
no, do not patch w/o supervision from an optometrist.
as an ADULT patching wont do anything anyway. it is generally accepted that patching only works before you are *9* years old or so. after that...no effect.
i think you are a bit confused over what lazy eye is. the term lazy eye implies permanently reduced acuity from a lack of visual DEVELOPMENT during the critical period of retinal/eye/visual development (birth thru age 8). do you have one eye that cannot see 20/20? that would be lazy eye . there are many causes of lazy eye, but the 2 most common ones are anisometropia (vast Rx difference between R & L ) and strabismus (permanently turned eye). an eye that is turned is not a lazy eye, although a permanently turned eye can CAUSE lazy eye .
what you describe is an eye turn that only occurs sometimes or under certain conditions. thats not lazy eye unless it had a permanent negative effect on the acuity of one eye. again lazy eye implies reduced acuity. patching does not un-turn an eye. patching only prevents suppression.
you need to tell your optometrist (if you are in the US) or optician (in the UK) that you thin you have an occasionally turned eye. that is not a lazy eye , tho.
You usu patch the good eye to get the worse eye to do some work.
But this depends on how old you are. Since you typed this I take it you are not 2 yrs old. Studies have shown that patching can have some success in patients up to the teen years. However it is much more successful as toddlers.
But you should consult with an optometrist and allow him/her to treatment plan.
good luck!
