Glaucoma eye test??
Question: I recently had a glaucoma test at the hospital and i am certian she told me the pressure behind my right eye was 5 and behind my left eye was 6. does anyone know what this means ? also i have been given drops to put in each eye, but sometimes i think i miss my left eye and it just runs down my face, should i try again or not ?
Answers: WHen I put drops in, I lay down on the bed or floor. I close both eyes, put a drop in the nasal corner of each eye and then open and close again. the drop goes righ in with the gravity. IF you have a hard time doing this, have someone else put them in the corner of your eye for you. If it calls for more than one drop, do it again! This is a trick we use with children too when they have pink eye and need drops and are scared. About pressure. High pressure does not make glaucoma. Low pressure does not mean you do not have glaucoma. However, the readings are different and the numbers are different depending on the machine that was used. In our office, a reading of 5 would be really low. A 20 would be normal to high. So, different measuring techniques are defined differently. I would really go to an Ophthalmologist and see what they say, I am not sure why you were in the hospital, so that is a mystery, but going to a specialist would seem prudent! Glaucoma is an increase in pressure in the eye. My grandmother had it and my mom has it. It is hereditary and can cause blindness if you don't treat it. My mom uses drops and her eye with the glaucoma is always red especially the eyelid. I don't know what the 5 or 6 means, sorry.
She has the same problem putting drops in. You should try again because you can lose sight in that eye.

so im guessing you have glaucoma? me too. i've had it since birth. anyway, let me answer you questions about the drops. i use drops as well, but only in my left eye and only at night. when i was little, i had to do it to both eyes more often. so, i have the same problem as you. i miss, too. but its VERY VERY important to take your eye drops. Glaucoma is a progressive disease. this means over time it may effect how overall vision. There's no cure, but there's plenty of good news! its incuralbe HOWEVER treatable. this is where your eye drops come into play. you see, with glaucoma, the fluids in your eyes do not drain out properly or the eyes produce too much. this fluid pressure damages the optic nerve and causes vision loss. Sometimes, its the lack of bloodflow to the retna that causes the damage. Your eye drops aid in slowing down the effects of glaucoma. Basically, even if you miss, try again. dont forget to take your meds. they are really important! and now to answer your question about the numbers. i believe the numbers indicate how much pressure the fluid puts on the eye. a pressure of less than 5 mmHg is too low and a pressure of over 21mmHg is too high. anything between 10 mmHg and 21 mmHg is considered normal. you must keep puting the drops in your eyes. When you hold the bottle don't look at it but look away from it. This way the drops get right in your eye also direct the drops to the corner of the eye not the centre
Normal intraocular pressure (according to the eye doctors I work for) are between 5 and 23 (I think these numbers vary by a couple points, depending on which medical journal the doctor has learned). The numbers are a way to screen for glaucoma, by checking your intraocular pressure. So you are on the low end of normal range.
Intraocular pressure is constantly changing by small increments. You could check it as often as you want, and the number would be different most of those times, even by a point or two or four. BIG changes (like 4 to 24, are less usual.)
I bet those drops given to you are not related to glaucoma at all. (if your pressure was 5 and 6) Maybe artificial tears or allergy drops? Did you have an eye infection?
Also, over the past years, knowledge and technology regarding glaucoma have changed. No longer do doctors rely soley on pressure as a diagnosis. A bigger factor is how the optic nerve head looks (at the back of the retina). People can have glaucoma without high intraocular pressure, or can have high pressure (ocular hypertension) with no glaucoma.
And, all 'pressure checkers' are calibrated to an average corneal thickness. If your cornea is thinner than average, your pressure will read falsely low. If thicker than average, will read falsely high. Doctors monitoring for signs of glaucoma will do an easy test to check your corneal thickness.
maybe you misunderstood. I have wide angle glaucoma. The pressure should be under 20. Now that I am on drops, my last test revealed a pressure of 14 which is very good. I will go for tests every 4 months then every 6 when we are sure it is under control. There is another type of glaucoma--maybe you have that. Check with the hospital again. It is a good idea for anyone to take a friend with them to the doctor because sometimes we are nervous and aren't able to hear everthing the doc says. Maybe you could get someone else to put the drop in. They are pretty expensive and you don't want to waste them, nor do you want to put the wrong amount in. Glaucoma, untreated can lead to blindness.
5 and 6 are really, really low. are you sure the doc didnt say 25 and 26 ? or 35 and 36 ?
almost no one with a pressure of *5* has glaucoma. there are exceptions, but that would be an extreme case to say the least.
the drops LOWER the pressure. so i doubt your doc wants your pressure to be LOWER than *5*.

There are many types of glaucoma, one type is called low tension but is not treated with drops. the average pressure is 10-21mmHg but just because it is higher does not necessiarly mean u have glaucom and if the pressure lies in between that you can still suffer from glaucoma.Perhaps she/he meant that with using the drops the new pressure was 5 and 6. put drops in both eyes as recommended by the ophthamologist, there are dispenser bottles avilable which aid instaillation you can ask about.
