Getting Contacts For the First Time??

Question: I recently just got contacts (have a trial pair for the moment until my follow-up appointment). It is hard for me to insert and remove them because I keep blinking and I get nervous. I was just wanting any tips or advice for me about contacts (easy insertion and removal tips, advice on if should sleep in them, etc). Should I get a back-up pair of glasses just in case? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!!!
Answers: Contacts are great and easy to wear. If you look up when putting them in you dont see your finger about to poke your eye so you dont have the temptaion to blink. Always rinse the contacts thoughly make theres some dust thats causing you to blink. I use both middle fingers to open the eye. One one on the top one on the bottom lid. and i use my pointer finger to put the lens in. You get use to pokeing you eye. Always keep a pair of glasses to use when your now wearing the contacts or when you just feel lazy and dont want to put your contacts on.
Hold your eyelids open, but eventually you won't have to. You are not supposed to sleep with them in, but I do.
Don't sleep in them, they will stick to your eye.
Have glasses for backup and to give your eyes a rest.
Insertion: hold your eye open with you other hand until you master this skill (It sucks but you just have to practice)--get a good mirror too.
Removal: Slide the contact over and slightly pinch the lens to take it out--at least that's what I do.
The first week is the worst, you'll catch on quick though I bet. I kept my glasses (each yeah my insurance covers either so much toward glasses or contacts) for at night or when I just feel too lazy to put my contacts in. I don't know how they will tell you to take them out but I found my own technique-face forward but look toward a corner of the ceiling and wall, drag the contact off the colored part of your eye and then just lightly pinch it off, painless.

And always wash your hands before you mess around with them, really, it's so gross not to, think of how many door knobs you've touched in a day...
the first time i got them it was hard to put them in and out but i kind of got use to doin it. so just when you first put them in try to take them out then just put them back in.
I can't afford them anymore- but oh are they great! I slept in mine and boiled them clean in the container- that's how much of a dinosaur I am! My first week I lost one in my eye! Had to call my brother and have him instruct me in baby steps how to retrieve it from what I imagined was my brain- but was just up in my lid. Keep your hands clean before and after- in fact the only time you should touch your face is when putting the lenses in. Have fun. Oh and always back-up glasses- and now you can get really cool sunglasses cheap!
Practice, practice, practice. Eventually, your eye will get used to a finger in there. Make sure your contacts are clean, or it will hurt like hell. DO NOT sleep in your contacts! You can get heinous infections! ALWAYS have a back-up pair of glasses, and as long as you are still practicing, keep them with you at all times, and also some solution and a case.
First off, what do you mean by a back up pair of glasses? Don't you already have glasses?
You asked about sleeping in them.Never ever sleep with them unless they are designed for 24/7 wear.If you do,it can go behind your eyeball and they'd have to suck it off your eyeball itself. You don't want that happening,so I hope its the brand for day and night wear.
I tried that one,it didn't work out for me as I didnt create enough tears to keep it moist.

Anyway. It's a little difficult to get it at first, but you should ALWAYS keep your hands clean.Don't wipe your hands on a towel when you've just washed em and you're going to put in or take out your contacts. The cloth and dust particles stick to your fingers and go on your contacts, making it frustrating to clean off.You waste liquid cleaner by doing this.Use Bounty, its way easier.
Make sure its on the right side and its clean, spotless clean before you put them on.The correct position of the contact lens should not be wide at the circumference.I'm sure they showed you this..
When you're taking them off,or puting them on look up,and place it on yur sclera - the white part of your eye.
Then look down.Close your eyes for a while.Do not press on them, dont do anything at all, just keep them closed, for a minute.Open your eyes, and if you feel uncomfortable, check out the problem. There might be air bubbles, which you fix by closing your eye for a while again.Or you may have in in the wrong way.You gota put em back in to fix that.
Don't touch your eye, touch your contact lens. When you touch your eye it gets red and hurts some.If your lens is stuck somewhere, just look up down,side-to-side,and it would appear eventually, but try not to touch your eyeball directly too much.

Don't think about what you're doing.Just do it normally. If you think about it,you'l get nervous..I dont thinkyou should be poking around at your eyes too long,it gets red and hurt.
Just wash your hands, wash your lens, look up,and gently place it on your eye.Look down, then close your eyes.
To remove, wash your hands, make sure your case is clean and refilled with liquid cleaner for your lens.Face a mirror, and touch the lens with a finger, then lift.I try to touch the part thats on the white part of my eye..makes me feel a little more relaxed.
I've been told to keep my nails short,it prevents tearing your contacts and bacteria from transferring.I kept it long, nothing happened to me,I was just very careful and very clean.

Main thing is,don't think about what you're doing, just let it flow, don't get nervous, just relax. If you start to blink, stop what you're doing and calm down.Blinking just makes things difficult...

Good luck!
Well, I got contacts a year or two ago. They are uncomfortable for a little while. I was so worried I'd hurt my eye for the longest time.
The white of your eye, you can't really feel when you touch it so try looking up a bit when you put your contact in and aim for a non colored part. Also, I find it easier to use my left middle finger to pull up my top eyelid (try to pull up your eyelid near the eyelashes and on the skin) and then balance my contact on my right finger, while pulling down right below my eye with my right middle finger. It opens the eye really wide and I have a bigger target to aim for.
As for removing: I open my eye the same way and with the tip of my finger (NOT the nail.) I'll grab it gently. Sometimes, it'll fold over and that's ok too.
DO NOT SLEEP IN YOUR CONTACTS unless they are the breathable kind. Talk to your eye doctor about that, If you sleep in them, your eyes can't get enough oxygen and when you wake up you'll have a scratchy eye that hurts really bad. Trust me, it's not fun. Especially with a color contact. :(
Make sure you wash your hands before touching your contacts and eyes, DON'T put your contacts in after you do your make up (mascara and eye liner hurt soooo bad when you get it in your eye, I speak from personal experience).
It's ok if you're nervous, with every time you remove and insert you contact you'll get more used to it.
Having a pair of glasses is nice in case your eyes dry out a bit (if you're staring at a computer screen or something for a while) and it's a relief to know that you can take them out and let your eyes breathe a bit without being blind. :)
you want to hold your lids open. And, you should always, always, always have a pair of glasses in your current RX, no matter if you primarily wear your contacts.
Well I put mine in kinda funky...One of my eyes I have to look straight while putting it in and the other I have to look sideways....I don't know why but it took me forever to figure it out... Basically you will just have to keep practicing.. It took me a while too... Beleive me... You will get used to it... And you shouldn't sleep with them in... Good luck!!
i just got contacts too!! lol ok well my doc gave me GREAT advise that works really well ok well fist hold your upper eyelid under the eyelashes with your thumb and hold your elbow up then with the other hand pull down your lower lid with your middle fonger and insert with your index finger, it helps if your index finger is dry because the contact lense will stick to the wetter surface to take out do the same thing with your thumb and pinch the contacts out so basically that means you sweep thumb across the iriss untill you get it out that usally works for me dont sleep in them its really bad for your eyes my doc told me that i think it was around 76 percent of eye ulsers are caused by wearing contacts wrong and yes you should have a backup pair for those days you cant seem to get them in good luck with them tells me how it goes blondchick4856@yahoo.com
